Matt Cooper

Born on February 25th, 1984, just outside Eastbourne in Sussex, I grew up in an essentially non-musical family, so my introduction to the world of musical creativity was purely divine guidance.

I discovered the evocative vibes of Yidaki not long before my eleventh birthday, and the dulcet tones of the bass guitar shortly after my eleventh birthday.

I experimented and imitated traditional and contemporary Yidaki rhythms for many years and, in between practice sessions, would jam along on bass to CD’s from various artists including The Levellers and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I practiced hard for a good ten years before landing a fantastic job at a local music store when I was 19, and it was there that I was introduced to the expanded sonic possibilities of the acoustic guitar, shortly before my 21st birthday. I was guided to approach this new instrument in the same way I would the bass – rhythmically.

I developed a unique percussive style made famous in the acoustic guitar world by American born, and now UK based, six string sensation – Preston Reed – and went from strength to strength over the years writing solo guitar music alongside my didj, bass and percussion exploits.
