The Serpent ⛎

In this article we explore some of the findings of Dr. Lee T. Shapiro and more :

Ophiuchus (/ˌɒfiˈjuːkəs/) is a large constellation straddling the celestial equator. Its name comes from the Ancient Greek ὀφιοῦχος (ophioûkhos), meaning "serpent- bearer", and it is commonly represented as a man grasping a snake.

Ophiuchus is one of the 13 constellations on the ecliptic of the Sun's annual path.

As a result of the movement of the Earth along its orbit in one year, the apparent position of the Sun against the background of the stars describes a circle in the sky called the ecliptic.

The apparent annual path of the Sun along the ecliptic passes through 13 of all 88 known constellations (12 of which are called zodiacal).

These are the true constellations in fact:

Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Ophiuchus, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius.

The thirteenth constellation that is missing from the zodiacal constellations of the tropical zodiac (which is also the main one used in the Western world by astrologers) is Ophiuchus.

Although a significant part of the Sun's visible path passes through it, it is not included in the zodiac.

This is because the zodiac signs, although they use the familiar names of the astronomical constellations, do not actually correspond to the movement of the Sun through them, but follow the annual seasons and the movement of the Sun relative to the Earth's horizon, starting at the vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere.

When Ptolemy created the current zodiac circle, he decided to divide the ecliptic into 12 equal parts, each of 30 degrees, and this gave rise to the so-called tropical zodiac.

He knew about the precession of the earth's axis and it was issued that the Sun passes through the constellation Ophiuchus.

The astronomical zodiac is that which takes into account the movement of the Sun through the constellations and which changes with the precession of the earth's axis.

The table below shows the residence time of the Sun in the individual views in the direction of the astronomical zodiac, not in the tropical direction.

Thus, the duration of the constellations varies from 6 days 9 hours and 36 minutes (for Scorpio) to 44 days and 12 hours (for Virgo)

The reason there is a difference between the astronomical and tropical zodiacs is due to the 25,800 year "wobble" of the earth's axis.
Now the vernal equinox is in the constellation Pisces, and the autumn equinox is in the constellation Virgo.
About 2000 years ago, however, the vernal equinox was in Aries and the autumn equinox in Libra.

This shifting of the equinoxes along the zodiacal constellations means that the earth's axis is slowly moving through space.
In about 26,000 years it describes a complete cone and returns to its original position.
This phenomenon is called precession and is due to the ellipsoidal shape of the Earth.
The gravitational influence on our ellipsoidal planet from the Sun and the Moon causes the change in the orientation of the Earth's axis with time.
Because of precession, the star charts are constantly out of date, and the positions of the celestial poles are constantly changing.
